A Complex World and the Simplicity of Faith

Complexity and Simplicity

Doesn’t life get really complicated at times? Relationships and other genders are hard to figure out, not to mention some of the calculus, physics or Arabic you may be studying. Sometimes it all gets overwhelming and difficult to navigate. While complex systems provide us with many benefits, the very complexity of solutions gives room to despair or failure.

God invites us to rest and trust in some simple truths. Jesus says, “Do not doubt but trust (or believe) (John 20: 27b) Paul writes, “For by grace you have been saved through faith…. It is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2: 8 )

The Community of Taize, in which tradition we will worship this coming Sunday, offers young adults direct and simple proposals for living the Christian life in a complex world. The 2013 proposals were: “1)Talk together about our faith journey; 2)Look for ways to encounter Christ; 3)Look for ways of relying on God; 4)Be open without fear to the future and to others.” I think these are good proposals for living.

Seventeen Lutheran UT students received Kohn-Hutter Scholarships through Lutheran Campus Ministry totaling $37,410 for the 2013-2014 School Year! That is a lot of money, and we are very pleased that Lutheran students at UT have this opportunity through LCM’s ministry. Additionally, 4 students also receive an extra $150 each through the Leon G. Bohls Family Scholarship.  The application process is open now, with a March 31 deadline.
